Care for Your Utilitarian Art

Your purchase is a (formerly) living, breathing thing, and though it is now on your kitchen counter, it still has a life that needs your care. Your food spends time on it, so you want it to stay healthy. Here are some tips to preserve it:

Food Safe — All Timber & Twine cutting boards, charcuterie boards, and utensils are food-safe. Food-safe wood is non-toxic hardwood with a tight, closed grain that helps prevent liquids and bacteria from becoming trapped in the pores. I typically use hardwoods such as maple, cherry, walnut, or oak for cutting boards and utensils.

Food-safe Finishes — I also use food-safe wood finishes such as pure tung oil mixed with a non-toxic citrus solvent to seal the wood, and then finish with a blend of beeswax and mineral oil to help permeate the wood and provide a durable finish.

Easily Cleaned — The finish can be easily cleaned with soap and water and dried. Occasionally you’ll want to reapply a beeswax and mineral oil paste (included with most purchases) to help maintain the seal—as you would with any wood product used with food.
